005A COVID vaccination uptake

005A COVID vaccination uptake

Notes
The latest version of 005A COVID vaccination uptake is v1
This folder is the successor to PCIT's original COVID vaccination programme folders, and forms part of the 005 COVID vaccination programme collection of search folders.

Searches

The top level folder contains 4 headline searches or reports about vaccination coverage of the organisation's currently registered population.
Info
As patients age, remember that younger children who were not eligible during the mass vaccination campaign, as well as those born since 2021, will show a very low vaccination uptake.

COVID vaccination status REPORT
In its presented state, this list report is very big and may not be helpful since it will report on every registered patient. It can be copied and used against smaller populations such as patients living in care homes, housebound, or patients on the Learning Disability register. In separate columns, the dates and manufacturers of the first 5 doses are shown.

COVID vaccination uptake by age
An audit report which offers a breakdown by age of the numbers of patients with vaccinations. There are limitations to how EMIS can display audit report data, so only numbers of patients are shown. To understand the percentage uptake across each age band it would be necessary to export the data to Excel and apply some formulae to work out the percentage uptake for the column.

All those not vaccinated, declined, or CI
All registered patients with no COVID-19 vaccinations on the record, who also do not have a code indicating that they are contraindicated to or have declined a vaccination. To limit the age drift, children under 12 are not included. This can be used as a general indicator of overall engagement. Consider that patients who were previously registered abroad may not yet have a complete coded record of vaccinations.

All patients with exactly 1 vaccination
This search only looks at patients over the age of 12 who have only received 1 dose. The age of 12 has been set to reflect those patients who have been eligible to receive vaccinations for a longer period of time. These patients have not subsequently declined or abandoned the vaccination programme after their 1st dose.

Risk Groups

The four risk groups presented define the searches found in the next folders, Not vaccinated and 1st COVID vaccination only. They are based on groups classified during the first year of the COVID-19 vaccination programme.
  1. Clinically at risk
  2. BAME
  3. BMI greater than 30
  4. Carers age 16-64
The clinically at risk group is based on separate searches (found in Data Quality folder) that are based on Tables 3 and 4 of the Green Book.

Not vaccinated

Simply any patient who has not been vaccinated, if they are found in any of the risk groups.

1st COVID vaccination only

Those patients found in a risk group who have only ever had 1 COVID-19 vaccination recorded on their record.

Data Admin

COVID vaccination course declined
Any registered patient who has declined where there are no COVID-19 vaccinations recorded, or where a declined code is found after the most recent COVID-19 vaccination.

COVID vaccination course abandoned
Similar to declined, any patient who has been coded as abandoning the vaccination course after the most recent COVID-19 vaccination.

COVID vaccine contraindicated
Any patient who has been coded as contraindicated. Unlike declined and abandoned searches above, this finds any code irrespective of vaccination history. Patients should be reviewed carefully, and consider whether other actions should be taken if they are at high risk of complications arising from a COVID-19 infection.

COVID at-risk groups for adults and under 16s
These searches determine who is clinically at-risk, and is based on Table 3 (adults) and Table 4 (under 16s) of the Green Book on COVID-19. Every effort has been made to include all conditions described in the tables, often deriving the logic from existing NHS business rules found in flu, shingles, or pneumococcal.
The searches should not be considered definitive since coding is very important. Severity of condition cannot always be conveyed in a code so some patients may not be included, or in conversely there are patients whose condition is not severe enough.
Under 16s have a slightly different set of clinical risks. Some conditions are omitted due to age, while other conditions have been included specifically for children.
Alert
There is no provision in these search for a clinician to mark a patient as clinically at risk if there are no diagnosis codes including them.

Coding

The searches are built on the codes defined by NHS Digital; SNOMED contains more codes, but a set list is maintained for the UK vaccination programme.
