Production of Levemir (insulin detemir) products has been discontinued and stock is expected to run out in November 2026. The manufacturer issued the notice more than 12 months in advance, and despite efforts by Medicines Management teams patients are still being prescribed Levemir.
Medicines Management teams will consider Practices to have work outstanding unless the search returns zero patients.
A search has been produced to identify all patients with an active course of Levemir, and the associated report can extract data from individual patient records which will help prescribing staff to identify key pieces of information to prioritise and arrange alternative insulin as soon as possible.
What does it do?
The search is intentionally set to look for active medication, and some patients may appear on the list having already switched to an alternative.
- If a switch has already occurred, end the active course of Levemir
- If Levemir has been added but never issued, end the active course.
The report has been designed to show the following information:
- Patient details, including contact information
- Date of earliest diabetes diagnois
- Type of diabetes based on latest code of Type 1, Type 2, secondary diabetes (eg: Type 3c, MODY)
- Current (active) insulin courses (irrespective of brand, or short-acting or long-acting)
- Past courses of long acting insulin
- Past course of short acting insulin
- Most recent HbA1c
- Most recent eGFR
