The Asthma audit search folder is part of 012 Audit ready
This folder contains a number of searches which can be used for monitoring and audit purposes. They have been designed to be used with a relative run date, if desired, to obtain a snapshot of coding or medication status at a particular point in the past.
Total asthmatics
All patients currently diagnosed as asthmatic. When this number differs from QOF, it suggests there are patients under the age of 6, as well as older patients who have not been prescribed medication for their asthma in the past 12 months despite 'active' asthma coding. While they are not currently counted for QOF, such patients could easily slip back onto the QOF register if a single inhaler is issued. Consider resolving asthma.
12 or more issues of SABA in last 12 months
Patients with a diagnosis of asthma who have had 12 or more issues of a SABA in the last 12 months. This suggests poor control of asthma due to overuse of blue inhalers. When building such a search there is a compromise depending on how many inhalers are issued on each prescription. Typically 2 inhalers issued at the same time (ie: one for home and one for school) could increase the number of SABAs issued, but the high threshold for 12 SABA prescriptions is likely to ignore double devices.
LABA medication but no ICS
Recent guidance highlights that long acting beta agonist medication should not be issued without an inhaled corticosteroid. This search helps you identify patients who may need review.
2 or more issues of steroids in last 12 months
Patients with asthma who have had 2 or more issues of systemic corticosteroids (prednisolone) in the past 12 months. Not all patients may have had multiple exacerbations, and patients who are prescribed prednisolone for other conditions such as Polymyalgia rheumatica will be captured even if they haven't had a single asthma exacerbation.
Hospital attendances/admissions in last 12 months
Patients with a diagnosis of asthma who have had a hospital attendance or admission in the previous 12 months. Some admissions may not have been for asthma; use report as starting point for checking admissions.
Patients with asthma who have not got a PAAP
Patients with a diagnosis of asthma who have not had a Personal Asthma Action Plan (PAAP) created. This should exist as part of the QOF requirements for AST007.
Asthma patients who have DNA in last 12 months
The national review of asthma deaths identifies that DNA for review places patients in a high risk category. This search allows users to be able to identify patients who have not attended during the last 12 months.
