Batch adding a calculation in EMIS

EMIS Web allows for certain clinical scores to be calculated in bulk on the population included list of a search.

The possible calculations are:
  1. BMI
  2. QCancer
  3. QDiabetes
  4. QFracture
  5. QRisk2
  6. QStroke

Instructions for batch running a calculation

  1. Build and run a search to identify the cohort that is to receive the batch calculation. Carefully consider the way the search is written - do you want it on patients of a certain age, or on those who already have a score, or is it ok to repeat the code irrespective of when it was last added?
  2. Go to Batch Data Manager, either via the EMIS globe or using the tab along from Population Reporting

  3. Press Add, then select Calculation

  4. Click on the spyglass on the Batch Add row to select the calculation type. Pick an authorising user (this should be a clinician)

  5. Add a description. This can be used to identify the purpose of the batch from the Batch Data Manager. Consider describing the composition of the cohort
  6. By List Type, change the dropdown to Search Population (Included)
  7. Use the spyglass below the dropdown to locate the search cohort. Double check the Details to confirm that it is the correct search (look at the date and the population count)
  8. Choose a date and time to run the batch, or select Immediately
The Batch Data Manager does give a short opportunity to undo the batch calculation is a mistake has been made

When running immediately, wait about 10 minutes then manually check a few patients to ensure that the calculation has been applied. For scheduled calculations remember to come back and apply the same checks.

If the chosen calculation is likely to have an impact on clinical decisions, think about creating some searches to pick up patients exceeding certain thresholds (eg: patients with QRISK >20% to offer a statin). Depending on the purpose of the exercise you may want to limit the search to scores added today.
