Eligible for COVID booster (HP424)
Overview/Purpose
This protocol allows users to check patient records to see if they
are eligible for a COVID vaccination.
What does it do?
This protocol is available for users to launch manually to
check whether patients are eligible for a COVID vaccination.
You
will need to select patient
There
are a number of aspects this protocol checks for (in the background) prior
to you seeing a message:
Whether
the vaccine has already been administered within the last 3 months
Eligibility
criteria
Allergies
or contraindications
Vaccine
declined
A
message will appear (see below screenshots), depending on which route
(from the above checks) the protocol has taken.
You
can then select an appropriate action from the message displayed
Why is it important?
This protocol will help team members quickly and efficiently
identify if a patient is eligible for a COVID vaccination. This is important
because it saves time within general practice, as well as ensuring accuracy.
What does it look like?
If the patient is eligible the message will ask if an appointment is being made and choosing yes will launch an appointment booking screen.

Patients who are currently 74 but due to turn 75 by 30/06/2026 are also included in the 'Over 75' cohort
If No is chosen then there is a recommendation to remind the patient that they are eligible and if they decline the COVID vaccination there is an option to code this.
Patients who are under 75 and have a code indicating they may live in a care home will get a different message. This highlights that the care home code alone will not necessarily put them into an eligible cohort and this may need to be confirmed with the person co-ordinating the practice or PCN care home visits. If the patient does not currently live in a care home there is an option to update that coding to ensure they get appropriate recalls in future.
Some patients have codes or medication on their record which may put them into the eligible cohort but where further clarification or checks may be needed. This is usually due to the way severely immunocompromised patients are defined in the Green Book but will need checking by an appropriate clinician before scheduling them for a COVID vaccination.
