Folic Acid High Dose Reminder (HP008)
Overview/Purpose
This protocol ensures that users are informed of the need for a patient to have high dose folic acid if:
- There is a BMI of >30
- They are diabetic
- They have coeliac disease
- They have a personal or family history of Spina Bifida
- They have epilepsy
- They have sickle cell disease
- They have Thalassaemia
What does it do?
- When low dose folic acid is selected in women under the age of 50 the user is alerted if any of the above issues exist
Why is it important?
There is a multitude of different evidence about high dose folic acid in pregnancy, this alert brings all of this information together into one place:
- There is a previous baby with, personal or family history of a neural tube defect (NICE)
- Have diabetes (NICE)
- Have epilepsy or are on epileptic medication (NICE)
- Have Sickle Cell Disease
