HP047 Eligible for Pneumo Vaccination
Type: Protocol
Overview/Purpose
To allow staff to check patients to see if they are eligible for a pneumonia vaccination
What does it do?
When triggered, the protocol evaluates:
- The patient's age.
- Whether the patient has already received a pneumonia vaccine.
- Any clinical characteristics that might necessitate a second vaccination.
- Based on these criteria, it guides the user step-by-step to determine if the patient is eligible for a pneumonia vaccination.
Why is it important?
The pneumococcal vaccine provides vital protection against serious bacterial infections, including:
- Pneumonia (lung infection).
- Meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord).
- Sepsis (life-threatening response to infection).
It also helps prevent related illnesses, such as sinusitis and ear infections. The vaccine is recommended for:
- Babies.
- Adults aged 65 and over.
- Individuals at higher risk due to certain medical conditions.
By ensuring eligible patients receive this vaccine, the protocol helps:
- Protect patients from potentially life-threatening illnesses.
- Improve immunization rates for at-risk groups.
- Fulfil national immunization recommendations, supporting QOF indicators and public health goals.
What does it look like?
See below screenshots which show an examples of the protocol in use:
System Dependencies
This protocol relies on accurate and up-to-date patient data, including:
- Vaccination records (e.g., previous pneumococcal vaccine doses).
- Clinical coding for risk factors (e.g., chronic medical conditions that increase susceptibility to pneumococcal infections).
Clinicians must ensure that this information is recorded and maintained correctly in the system for the protocol to function effectively.

Change management considerations
Fitting your practice
Staff need to be made aware that this protocol exists and how to access it. The protocol can be found in the OneLauncher Admin under the "Eligibility" option.
Best Practices
- Ensure staff are trained to use the protocol effectively during patient contacts.
- Communicate the importance of accurate coding to optimise the protocol’s functionality.
- Monitor its usage and adapt workflows if required to maximize efficiency without overburdening staff.
How to get it
This protocol is automatically installed in your system. It is available via your OneLauncher Admin or f12 menu.
