Hyperkalaemia Alert Closer (HP068)

Overview/Purpose

This Hyperkalaemia Alert Closer tools is a protocol within EMIS Web, which has been designed to prompt users to confirm that they have actioned a raised potassium result of >5 mmol/L.  It works in tandem with the Hyperkalaemia Warnings protocol (HP067) to close off the appearance of raised potassium warnings where the result has been actioned appropriately.

What does it do?

An alert will show on saving when the latest potassium within the last 7 days is >5 mmol/L to ask the user to confirm if they have taken action because of the result.

Why is it important?

Severe index hyperkalaemia events are associated with adverse outcomes, including arrhythmia and mortality. Despite this, retesting following an index event has been shown to be uncommon, and incidence of recurrence is much higher than that of the index event. Horne et al. There has been an associated CAS alert
