Coding Results of Diabetic Retinopathy Screening (HP079)

Overview/Purpose

This protocol is designed to assist your admin team in the coding of the outcome of the National Diabetes Retinopathy Screening Program. Run via the F12 Protocol Launcher it prompts staff to consider coding the retinopathy and maculopathy grading for each eye through the use of a protocol rather than a template at the point of attaching the results document to the patient’s records. 

What does it do?

  • Checks that the patient is on the diabetic register
  • Advises the user to verify a patient's diagnosis or history if they are not currently on the diabetic register 
  • Offers the user a choice of recording the results on a template or by clicking through a protocol
  • Adds codes to the medical record which correspond to the results selected by the user

Why is it important?

This protocol helps to efficiently standardise the coding of retinal screening results by multiple users.

What does it look like?

Warning
EMIS automatically uses today's date for codes added via the pop-up approach, even if the consultation has been backdated to the event. If the date of the finding is especially important, use the template option.

If a patient is not currently on the diabetic register, including those with Diabetes resolved, a prompt will ask the user if they wish to continue before launching a consultation.
