Asthma - Multiple oral steroids (HP088)

Asthma - Multiple oral steroids (HP088)

Purpose:
This protocol will:
  1. highlight where asthmatic patients have had more than 2 courses of oral steroids in the last 12 months, flagging that they should be reviewed and their medication adjusted.

What does it actually do?

The protocol performs the following functions:
  1. On loading the record it checks to see if the patient has asthma
    1. If they do, it validates if they also have COPD - if so the alert is supressed
  2. If the patient has asthma and has had 3 or more issues of steroids in the last 12 months an alert is displayed to warn the user

What does it look like?

If you hover over the alert further information is shown:

System Dependencies:

This protocol alert is dependent on accurate coded information within EMIS web, contemporaneously recording medication

System Trigger

Document triggers here
System Trigger: Load record and update a record
Run mode: Always run
Enable trigger for: All clinical members

Fitting your practice

You need to consider how many protocol alerts you have active within your practice. This would fit well following an audit to look at patients who are highlighted as high risk by the national review of asthma deaths searches and then a period of time where this is focussed on within the practice.

How to get it

This protocol is an optional handy protocol so needs to be requested to be installed in your system.  If you want us to install this in your site please submit a ticket to request this.
