Consider coding at risk of Atrial Fibrillation (HP238)

Consider coding at risk of Atrial Fibrillation (HP238)

Purpose:
This protocol will:
  1. highlight patients ages 50 or over at risk of Atrial Fibrillation with a screen prompt.
  2. Ask the user if they wish to code the patient "At risk of Atrial Fibrillation"
  3. If the patient is already coded with at risk of AF, it will flag to consider an ECG/AF review when symptoms are coded.

What does it actually do?

The protocol looks for episodes within the record that were entered today which may suggest Atrial Fibrillation.  It then flags with a screen prompt on entry of these episodes to ask the user to consider if they should code the patient as "At risk of Atrial Fibrillation".  This code gets picked up by our other Atrial Fibrillation alert and will highlight if an ECG hasn't been done, and when this flag was added to the record.  The coding that will trigger the flag is:
  1. Chest pain
  2. Palpitations
  3. Light-headedness
  4. Dizziness
  5. Syncope
  6. Collapse
  7. Loss of consciousness

What does it look like?

On updating the record, the code that has triggered the alert is highlighted and the user is prompted to choose if they wish to record the patient as being "At risk of Atrial Fibrillation"

System Dependencies:

Relies on using the clinical system to code symptoms that patients are experiencing accurately and the user being able to decide if they wish to code the patient as being at risk of atrial fibrillation

System Trigger

System Trigger: Update patient record
Run mode: Always run
Enable trigger for: All clinical prescribers

Fitting your practice

Your clinicians need to be aware that this protocol is live in your system and will flag patients who are potentially at high risk of AF, but that they themselves need to decide if this is the case.
