Potential Cancer Alert (HP239)

Purpose:
This protocol will:
  1. Searches for common symptoms known to lead to cancer.
  2. Flags repeated occurrences over 12 months.
  3. Prompts clinicians to "think cancer" for timely diagnosis.

What does it actually do?

On saving the patient record, the protocol will interrogate the codes added today and look at if there have been multiple instances of the same code in the last 12 months.  The codes the protocol checks for includes:
  1. Shoulder pain 
  2. Thoracic pain 
  3. Thoracic back pain 
  4. Abdominal pain 
  5. Acid Reflux/GORD
  6. Loss of Appetite 
  7. Weight loss – when coded as a problem (only unintentional or abnormal weight loss codes)
