Purpose
The Spirometry Template has been designed to provide clinicians with a holistic, end-to-end workflow for conducting, interpreting, and documenting spirometry.
Unlike traditional templates that focus solely on FEV1/FVC inputs, this tool brings together the entire clinical picture by incorporating:
- Baseline observations
- Measurements (pre and post bronchodilator)
- Interpretation aligned with LLN & Z-score guidance
- Diagnosis prompts (Asthma, COPD, ACOS, pulmonary fibrosis)
- Management and follow up planning
This holistic structure ensures that users capture essential observations before moving into measurements and interpretation, supporting safer and more accurate clinical decision-making
What Does it Actually Do
The Spirometry Template guides clinicians through each stage of the spirometry assessment, providing clinical prompts, calculation support, and structured fields that ensure consistency and compliance with ARTP/NICE-aligned practice.
Specifically, it enables the user to:
-
Record baseline observations, consent, and E/O findings relevant to lung assessment such as smoking status, height/weight/BMI, oxygen saturation, inhaler timing, MRC scale, and medical/family/occupational history.
-
Enter spirometry measurements: Pre- and post-bronchodilator FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC ratio, slow vital capacity, predicted values, and prompts for acceptability and repeatability criteria
-
Interpret results using LLN-based logic, Z-scores, and pattern-based indicators.
-
Access diagnosis guidance for Asthma, COPD, ACOS, and Pulmonary Fibrosis.
-
Document actions, referrals, and follow-up requirements within the Management & Action Plan.
-
Launch relevant QOF templates directly from the Diagnosis section.
-
Access useful resource links (NICE, BTS/SIGN, GOLD, etc.)
Record action plan: Free text management plan, referral field, next follow-up date, and links to guidance
The result: a structured, intuitive, and clinically aligned spirometry workflow — all in one place.
