A&E Self Harm Safeguarding (HP001)

A&E Self Harm Safeguarding (HP001)

Overview/Purpose

This protocol flags a reminder for your team to check for self harm codes when filing A&E letters. If the patient has visited A&E for self-harm or an overdose, the protocol will prompt to create a letter to invite the patient in for a review. Additionally, if there are already safeguarding concerns recorded for the patient, a warning message will appear, then a task box will launch so you can send a task to the safeguarding lead in the practice,

Product

This protocol is part of the PCIT toolset product

What does it do?

The stages of the protocol are listed below:
  1. The first part of this protocol asks the user if the patient has attended A&E for self harm or an overdose
  2. If yes, a letter can be launched to invite the patient in for a review.
  3. The records are then checked for high risk patients (with additional safeguarding concerns)
  4. If there is an additional safeguarding concern:
    1. A warning message will appear
    2. Then a task box will load so you are able to inform the safeguarding lead that the patient has attended A&E.

Why is it important?

This protocol is important because it will remind the user to follow certain procedures if a patient has attended A&E for self harm or an overdose. As well as flagging to the safeguarding lead if the patient currently has any existing safeguarding concerns coded in their records.

What does it look like?

See below screenshot which shows an example of the protocol in use:

If you click yes to the above it will launch the safeguarding letter. The protocol then checks the records and if there are additional safeguarding concerns, the below box will appear:

Change management considerations

We would suggest an internal practice discussion prior to requesting installation of this protocol. If the practice team is on board with installing this in your practice, during the discussion it can be decided which job categories to set this protocol live for. It is also  worth reviewing your safeguarding protocols to see if this aligns with your existing procedures. Once this protocol has been installed and activated, we would suggest informing the relevant team members.
