There are two things to switch on in Medicus before Nexus works. They do different jobs and you need both:
| What you enable | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Bulk data extraction | Your practice's record history flows into Nexus, so dashboards, QOF and recall lists have something to work from |
| The app (browser extension) | Clinical decision support inside Medicus itself, for the patient in front of you |
Who can do this. Whoever does it needs both the Medicus permissions to reach the menus below *and* the practice's authority to turn on data sharing with Primary Care IT. It is normally the practice manager or a partner.
Sign the governance documents first. The data sharing agreements live in Nexus, not in Medicus, and an administrator has to sign them off before you can complete onboarding. See Data sharing agreements.
Both journeys start the same way: sign in to Medicus and open Modules from the left-hand sidebar.
Scroll the module list down to Data Sharing & Integrations and click it.
That opens the Data Sharing Dashboard, and everything below happens inside it.
This is what shares your patient record history with Nexus so you can review and report on it.
In the Data Sharing sidebar, scroll down to Data Exports and choose Bulk Data Extracts.
Click Enable bulk extract, at the top right.
Choose Primary Care IT from the list.
Careful here. Other data processors appear in this list — Ardens among them. Picking the wrong one sets up somebody else's extract, not ours. The row you want reads *Data Processor: Primary Care IT*.
Read the agreement text, then click Enable data extract.
Primary Care IT now appears under Currently Enabled Extracts, with the date and who enabled it. That is what "done" looks like.
Nexus also provides a Chrome extension that shows decision support beside the patient record. Every member of your team who uses Medicus installs it in their own browser — you may need local IT to approve it. Enabling the app in Medicus is what allows the extension to work at all.
If you have just finished step 1 you are already in the right menu. Otherwise open Modules → Data Sharing & Integrations as above.
In the sidebar, under Connected Apps, choose App Directory, then click Enable app at the top right and pick Primary Care IT Nexus.
Read the agreement text, then click Enable app.
Primary Care IT Nexus now shows under Currently Enabled Apps, and the browser extension will start working for your team.
Enabling the extract is the start, not the finish — your data still has to be brought across, and that takes rather longer than these clicks do. Medicus practices — getting your data into Nexus explains the queue, the timings and what you will hear from us at each step.
