The Search Planner is for planning and tracking changes to a whole estate of clinical searches — most commonly when reviewing an inherited search folder or planning a migration to a new clinical system. Rather than editing searches one by one, you annotate the whole tree first, agree the plan, then build.
Creating a project
From Search Planner, create a project from either:
- an uploaded search XML — e.g. an exported EMIS folder of searches and reports; the tree is parsed and displayed, or
- a library source — start from content already on the platform.
Planning the work
Open the project and work through the search tree. For each search you record a decision:
- No changes — keep as is
- Needs updating — carries forward with amendments
- New — to be built
- Delete — retire it
Add tags and notes to any node to capture the detail — *why* it needs updating, who owns the decision, dependencies. The project list shows each project's change count, so you can see the size of the job at a glance.
From plan to build
Once the plan is agreed, the searches marked for work become your build list — for Medicus sites, the Medicus Search Builder can transform existing EMIS searches into Medicus format as a starting point.

The Search Planner is enabled per user — if you can't see it and think you should, ask your organisation admin.
